The Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School Department of Athletics, alongside the Hall of Fame Selection Committee, announced the fifth Apprentice Athletics Hall of Fame class Thursday.

The class includes Legacy Group inductees Jim Bundick and George Rhoades, Builder Group inductees David Barlow and Bruce Shumaker and Contributor Group inductees Jim Heath and Horace Underwood.

Bundick was a two-sport athlete from 1964-67 at The Apprentice School, winning the Gold Athletic Award. Playing football and wrestling, Bundick served as the 1969 class president as well. Rhoades ran track from 1966-70, winning the Gold Athletic Award as well. An Apprentice Athlete of the Year, he was part of the undefeated track team in 1967 and 1968.

Barlow was a two-sport athlete, playing football and wrestling from 1992-96. He is currently sixth all-time in total tackles and fifth in unassisted tackles in his career. He is also tied for fourth in interceptions and holds the highest winning percentage in Apprentice history on the wrestling mat. Shumaker was the head wrestling coach from 2008-17, producing 36 All-Americans, 20 USCAA champions and the 2009 NCWA National Championship among many other accolades.

Heath served as The Apprentice School’s first full-time sports information director from 2000-15. Along with establishing relationships with local media and compiling records for the school, Heath helped to obtain the first website specific to athletics at Apprentice early in his career. Underwood served as the athletics director for 11 years from 1979-90, winning the Peninsula Sports Club’s Charles Karmosky Award in 2015.

Over the summer, the Department of Athletics will publish in-depth looks at each inductee’s history at The Apprentice School on a biweekly basis, starting May 25. The Hall of Fame induction ceremony is set to take place Sept. 29.
