Future Virginia-class Submarine Named Atlanta

Published October 30, 2024

Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro announced on Oct. 23 that the future Virginia-class submarine SSN 813 will be named for the city of Atlanta.

The submarine is set to be delivered by Newport News Shipbuilding.

The ship-naming ceremony took place in Atlanta at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum.

It honors the city of Atlanta, and crews of the five previous Navy vessels named Atlanta. This continues the recent trend of naming Virginia-class submarines after cities, which includes San Francisco (SSN 810), and Miami (SSN 811).
