Standards Series: Shift Turnover
Published December 3, 2025
Shift turnover – part of Newport News Shipbuilding’s Deck Plate Standards approach – is a process waterfront leadership uses to communicate all incomplete work to the next shift, keeping operations continuous.
“The importance of an effective turnover is that it removes all uncertainty. Foremen are able to discuss high risk areas, lessons learned and address any questions, which in return helps eliminate rework,” said Angela Bryant (X10).
The shift turnover process also ensures critical information and documentation is passed along to avoid potential miscommunication.
Over the course of this year, the Standards Team is sharing all 12 elements of the Construction Operating System/Deck Plate Standards approach. For more information, visit the Standards Team’s website on MyNNS.
