Summer Interns Experience Virtual World
Published July 10, 2024
Newport News Shipbuilding Modeling and Simulation hosted a ModSim summer intern experience at Brooks Crossing that included an overview presentation of the department’s virtual reality (VR) training applications, plus an interactive hands-on experience with the VR equipment.
Eighty-eight interns were immersed in VR scenarios and interactions throughout the deck of an aircraft carrier and a storage facility. The training applications tested the interns’ safety and spatial awareness skills and knowledge in a realistic environment without leaving the comfort of the demonstration space.
“Stepping into the virtual world was a transformative experience that provided insights to how technology can be used to minimize risk, allowing for precision and innovation,” said Katarina Camacho, an engineering intern.
Enhanced training through virtual simulation reduces the need for physical mock-ups, expands access to a larger pool of trainees and allows employees to upskill and re-skill as needed.
