Aivars Cudney (X32), a sheet metal craftsman working on Enterprise (CVN 80) at Newport News Shipbuilding, is known across the shipyard for being the person others turn to for help.

When he no longer felt satisfied in his previous career, a friend suggested he apply to the shipyard. He has now been at NNS for over seven years.

“As soon as I started here, I hit the ground running. I took in as much information as I could, so I could help other mechanics around me,” he said. Regardless of trade, Cudney uses his knowledge to help other shipbuilders, stating “we’re all in the same boat.”

Cudney’s leadership style has also led him to leadership roles. He had the opportunity to be a welding instructor. “Getting to see new mechanics learning to weld and seeing their ‘ah-ha’ moment was very fulfilling,” he said.

His leadership mindset is also reflected in his creativity and performance. “There’s always a solution to a problem. If something needs working out, I get creative. I like to think outside the box. There is always a way, you just have to find it,” Cudney said.

Cudney takes great pride in his work and always aims for top quality. “We are building a home for people. You have to build it as if you are living on it yourself. Thousands of people are depending on us every day. If we don’t provide top quality, people’s lives are at risk,” he said.

When asked what advice he would offer new shipbuilders, he stated, “Always have a questioning attitude. Never be afraid to ask questions.”
