A Message from NNS President Kari Wilkinson: Independence Day
Published July 3, 2025
Fellow Shipbuilders,
I have always been deeply appreciative of the freedoms we enjoy as Americans. Further, I know that these freedoms are hard-fought and won, born from commitment and sacrifice, and should never be taken for granted. Yet this year, I have a renewed sense of purpose that comes from building ships for the United States Navy not far from where our nation’s independence was won.
Celebrating my first Fourth of July in Virginia, I have been reflecting on the historical significance of this place we call home. Like the battlefields of Yorktown, our two miles of waterfront along the James River are deeply symbolic to this region and to our nation. We have a front row seat to American perseverance and sacrifice as we go about the business of the nation day in and day out.
To have the former USS Enterprise (CVN 65) at one end of our shipyard is a constant reminder of our great history and enduring legacy forged by our predecessors. Moreover, to have the next USS Enterprise (CVN 80) at the other end of our shipyard represents a continuation of our critical mission into present day.
I have always believed that being a shipbuilder is not just a job – it is a commitment to purpose. It takes strength, resolve and scrappy determination, and it is not for everyone. For those who answer the call, there is no greater feeling of accomplishment than seeing hard work come to life. That feeling was palpable last week with the launch of Arkansas (SSN 800) – and I am grateful to every shipbuilder who brought her one step closer to joining the fleet.
Although some milestones are more visible than others, they all represent a commitment, and they all help us earn confidence back as we deliver on those promises. Every day at Newport News Shipbuilding, each of us has the opportunity to make a positive difference in support of the freedoms we celebrate this weekend. Thank you for being an important part of our team – it is an honor to serve alongside you. Please be safe and have a happy Independence Day.
A grateful American shipbuilder,
Kari Wilkinson
