A Shipbuilder’s Heart Walk Journey

For over 10 years, the Heart Walk has been more than just an annual event for Tish McDonald (T55).

“It’s been a personal mission, a tribute to loved ones, and a way to give back to the community,” McDonald said. What began as a simple act of donating and walking has evolved into a deeply meaningful commitment to expand her efforts throughout Newport News Shipbuilding.

McDonald first joined the Heart Walk as a donor and participant, drawn by the American Heart Association’s (AHA) work promoting cardiovascular health. In 2016, her involvement deepened when she began leading fundraising efforts at NNS – rallying co-workers, organizing events and raising awareness.

“Initially, I walked because I believed in the AHA’s mission. Over time, my ‘why’ became heartbreakingly personal,” McDonald said.

In 2014, she lost a cousin to heart failure. The following year, her nephew passed away from a massive heart attack. Then in 2016, her mother succumbed to congestive heart failure. Since then, two more of her cousins have died from heart attacks.

Each loss strengthened her resolve. The Heart Walk became McDonald’s way to honor family members and fight for a future where fewer families experience the loss she has.

“I walk for my family. I walk for those still fighting. I walk for the hope that one day, heart disease will no longer be the leading cause of death. The Heart Walk is a reminder that together, we can make a difference – one step, one story, one life at a time.”
