AASA serves as the community of practice for the professional development and mentorship of African-American employees at Newport News Shipbuilding. Professional enrichment includes business seminars, resume writing workshops, panel discussions and guest speakers. AASA has a strong commitment to community service and hosts programs that promote cultural awareness and diversity. Its education focus supports Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) initiatives, tutoring and college bus tours. Some of the community organizations AASA supports are Career Pathways, Boys and Girls Club, and American Diabetes Association.
