Jason Sutton, vice president of Business Transformation and Technology and CIO, speaks about the importance of relationships at an event co-hosted by L.E.A.R.N. and ASIAN.

After-Work Event Stresses Importance of Relationships

Getting to know the priorities and ambitions of fellow shipbuilders was the focus of a recent after-work event featuring Jason Sutton, vice president of Business Transformation and Technology and CIO.

During the event co-hosted by L.E.A.R.N. (Learning, Expanding, Achieving, Results, Networking) and ASIAN (Asian Shipbuilders Including All Nationalities), Sutton reminded attendees that the work at Newport News Shipbuilding involves relationships and people.

He shared the three questions he uses to get to know someone: Who do you hold dear? Where are you from? What is your personal ambition?

“I really enjoyed the event,” said David Makell. “Mr. Sutton provided critical insight regarding deep and shallow work that I think all of us shipbuilders needed to hear. It was great to be in the room with so many people from different facets of the business as well.”

Makell said it is easy to lose site of the big picture while working in your own area of responsibility. The event “provided us an opportunity to engage with people we wouldn’t normally meet and learn about what they do to push the mission forward.”
