The Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School baseball team won the New South Athletic Conference Tournament Championship Saturday.

After a 5-0 loss to fourth-seeded Lighthouse Christian College to open the tournament Thursday, the Builders staved off elimination by defeating Mid-Atlantic Christian University in the Thursday night game, 3-2. The Apprentice School then knocked off Virginia State University Friday, 11-1, setting up the rematch against the Lighthouse Christian Makos for the championship on Saturday.

The Builders and Makos were in a shootout in the first game of the day, but The Apprentice School ended up pouring on runs in the late innings to win, 19-9, to force a winner-take-all championship. The Builders kept the pressure on Lighthouse and claimed the championship in a 15-3 no-doubt win.

The Apprentice School is now preparing for the USCAA Small College World Series, which begins Monday in DuBois, Pennsylvania. The Builders are the No. 4 seed.
