Apprentice School Foundation Names 2022 Scherrer Award Recipient
Published January 4, 2023
Jamica “JJ” Jones, an O43E maintenance electrician apprentice, recently received the Apprentice School Foundation’s 2022 Scherrer Award.
Jones was selected for the honor by Apprentice School faculty members for demonstrating academic excellence, high moral character and the desire to continue her career at Newport News Shipbuilding beyond graduation.
This annual award is made on behalf of Kevin Scherrer, a 1986 graduate of The Apprentice School, and is made possible through contributions by the Scherrer family and co-workers. Scherrer, a rigger apprentice, earned the Charles F. Bailey Award for academic excellence and retired from Newport News Shipbuilding in 2022 after 38 years of service.
Jones started her apprenticeship in August 2018 after transferring into The Apprentice School from Security (O15). She has excelled in her trade – working as a lead mechanic and make-up foreman for the O43E apprentice crew. Jones also completed the Frontline FAST program in cohort 17.
She also is a third-year forward/center on The Apprentice School women’s basketball team and has been a member of the Builder Athletic Council for all three years. Jones will complete her apprenticeship in the first quarter of this year.
