Apprentices Attend Women’s Equality Breakfast

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Newport News Shipbuilding’s Apprentice School hosted regular Female and Builder (FaB) Talks for female apprentices and women across the shipyard to hear from leaders and network.

“This is a male-dominated environment, and we wanted women to have someone they could talk to about the challenges they were experiencing on the waterfront,” said Regina McLean, manager of College Programs, Student Services, Night School and Admissions. “This gave them an opportunity to get together, talk about those things and have honest answers.”

After a pause during the pandemic, the program made a comeback last week with a Women’s Equality Breakfast for female apprentices. Dr. Latitia McCane, director of Education, delivered keynote remarks and Sharonda Steverson and Shawn Everett of Student Services also helped facilitate the event.

McCane told attendees about her background and what led her to The Apprentice School, as well as her philosophy for leading faculty, staff and students. She also encouraged the women to be their authentic selves, focus on what’s best for the organization, and to “stay in their own lane” and avoid distractions as they work to move up within the company.

“I’m walking in this purpose and in this lane. I don’t pay attention to any of the noise because I’ve got all these folks’ lives in my hands, and I’ve got to get it right for all of you and your families,” McCane said.

Those interested in attending a future session should check the events calendar for upcoming dates.
