Building Futures Together

Mentorship plays an important role in shaping Newport News shipbuilders.

Working side by side as scouts in the WAVES (Workforce Attraction Via Experienced Shipbuilders) program, Daryl Davis (O19) and Shay Thomas (O55) have dedicated their time and experience to mentoring local students interested in pursuing careers at Newport News Shipbuilding.

Scouts are shipbuilders assigned to high schools, trade schools and community colleges to mentor, recruit and assist students entering the trades industry workforce. Scouts work directly with students throughout the school year and assist them with applying for open positions at NNS.

Through their passion and guidance, Davis and Thomas provide more than just information to students. They help them gain self-confidence, direction and a picture of what their future could look like.

“I want these students to take the opportunities I didn’t take,” said Thomas. “I want them to know all the opportunities that are offered at the shipyard and what their career could look like.”

Their mentoring styles are rooted in genuineness, connection and consistency. Through sharing their challenges and wins in their own career paths, Davis and Thomas help students see what’s possible. “College isn’t the only way forward, and it’s not for everybody. We’re here to expose options, expand outlooks, and empower students to step into opportunities they may not even know exist yet,” said Davis.

“Patience and communication are important,” Thomas said. “We meet these students where they are. We get on their level and then help them get to the next place. If students are interested in welding, we will bring in a welder. We cater to the students.”

Together, they highlight the importance of a strong work ethic, respect and taking advantage of opportunities. “You don’t have to limit your path. There are a million ways to get there,” said Thomas.

Asked what advice to give those interested in volunteering with WAVES, Davis said, “Go for it, but make sure you’re passionate about it, because you’re changing someone’s life.”

“If you are willing to be the person you needed, then the WAVES program needs you,” said Thomas.

Shipbuilders who are interested in volunteering with WAVES or other SEEKnns (Shipbuilders Engaging and Educating Kids) programs should contact Sheryce Moore (K18).
