Changes to Standard Shift Times for Production Workforce

Published August 27, 2025

As Newport News Shipbuilding prepares to transition out of the hot weather schedule, there is an opportunity to combine production needs with shipbuilder feedback and change the standard shift times for the production workforce.

Beginning Monday, Sept. 15, production shift times will transition to:

  • 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with lunch from 11 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. (first shift)
  • 2:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. with lunch from 7 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. (second shift)
  • 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. with lunch from 3 a.m. until 3:20 a.m. (third shift)

While this change impacts the entire production team, many production support organizations will also transition to this schedule. Impacted teams will be notified by management no later than Friday, Aug. 29.

Shipbuilders not notified by their management regarding this schedule change will continue to work the standard shift schedule.

This change will provide further standardization across NNS as well as increased opportunities for collaboration between shifts and additional support for extended hours. It will also benefit shipbuilders as shift hours are outside of the highest congested traffic times in Hampton Roads.
