Even before he earned an associate degree in mechanical engineering technology at Tidewater Community College (TCC), Phillip Le (E82) was already working in his field.

Le, who graduated from TCC in December 2022, has worked a co-op position at Newport News Shipbuilding since last fall. Co-ops are paid positions for college students that allow them to work 20 hours a week while still attending school full time.

“As a co-op, you are learning and you’re getting paid for it, which is a cool thing,” said Le, whose team is planning for the inactivation of aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68).

The fact that NNS supports the U.S. Navy adds a layer of pride to his work. “What you’re doing truly matters – not only to the Navy but to the greater defense of the country and the world,” he added.

Now pursuing a bachelor’s degree at Old Dominion University, he encourages fellow students to seek opportunities at NNS for real-world experience. He also believes co-op students and interns bring value to the company.

“There are a lot of smart minds out there, and when you get a bunch of smart minds, you can produce a great product,” he said.

NNS Talent Acquisition is accepting applications for college student co-op opportunities in business management, engineering, IT and supply chain management through July 21. NNS is seeking students majoring in accounting, business administration, business management, economics, finance, engineering, computer science or supply chain management.

To qualify students must:

• Be enrolled in school full time (minimum 12 credit hours).
• Be able to work 20 hours per week.
• Have a minimum 2.5 GPA.
