Ethics Month Concluded in August

Newport News Shipbuilding hosted a series of lunch and learns focused on ethics and compliance last month.

While it’s an important topic year-round, Ethics and Compliance Awareness Month in August provided an opportunity to highlight the company values of integrity, safety, respect, engagement, responsibility and performance. It also gave shipbuilders time to reflect on the values that guide their actions daily.

In an effort to meet shipbuilders where they are, this year’s lunch and learns also included in-person events on the waterfront, providing shipbuilders the opportunity to engage with other shipbuilders and leadership.

”It’s nice to have something in the yard including workers. Leadership has their sessions discussing ethics but it feels good to be included and shows we matter,” said Takesha Tatum (X33), who attended an ethics and compliance-themed cookout led by the Operations Division.

The month also included a panel discussion focused on ethical issues on the waterfront featuring trades directors from across Operations.

“The directors were able to share from past experiences and really lean in on how to properly handle ethical issues on the waterfront,” said Brittany Dorsey (K79), Operations chief of staff and the presenter for the panel.

The panel took place in the yard during lunch and was also livestreamed, allowing shipbuilders inside and outside of the gates to participate and engage.

While Ethics and Compliance Awareness Month has come to a close, shipbuilders have a continued responsibility to uphold the company values.
