Fleet Support Celebrates Division Program Milestone

On Oct. 2, Newport News Shipbuilding’s Fleet Support Division hosted a luncheon across all three shifts to celebrate the advancement to green zone controls for SUBSAFE work – a designation that also allows NNS to perform SUBSAFE work as an Alteration Installation Team (AIT) in public shipyards across the country.

The luncheon served as a “thank you” to shipbuilders throughout the Fleet Support value stream who helped the program achieve green zone controls.

As Richard Barnwell (K15) explained, this win is not owned by any single team.

“This has been a massive effort,” he said. “It took engineers, trades, quality – it’s hard to name each team involved – to make this happen.”

Ed Fleiss (K15), director of Fleet Support Programs, said “The luncheon is a small token of appreciation considering the hard work the team has done over the past five years. The SUBSAFE green status signifies our commitment to first-time quality for submarine fleet support work.”
