Forging a Path: Building a Career at NNS
Published October 7, 2026
For many college students, an internship is an opportunity to explore potential career paths and gain experience. For Colin Scharff (A572), a metallurgical engineer, it was the start of a career at Newport News Shipbuilding.
As a material science engineering major at Virginia Tech, Scharff joined NNS as an intern in lab services in 2023 and again on the metallurgical team at the Foundry in 2024.
“Both of my internships were great. They allowed me to meet other people in and outside of my field,” he said.
During his internships, Scharff gained hands-on experience and learned from shipbuilders. One of the most memorable parts of his experience was his time at NNS’ Foundry.
“I learned a lot during my time at the Foundry. I was able to see of all of the different areas involved in the operations of the Foundry, be involved in the molding and casting process as an intern, and gain a better understanding of the importance of what we do here,” he said.
After graduating, Scharff accepted a full-time position at NNS. “I got an offer after my internship. It was a great opportunity and I quickly accepted. I enjoyed my experience interning and I was happy to come back. I’ve been here a year now and it’s been a really great experience,” he said.
Scharff encourages students to take advantage of internship opportunities at NNS. “Don’t be afraid to learn something that may not be tied to your major and apply yourself. That was the biggest thing that helped me,” he said. “Ask questions, get involved and learn as much as you can.”
He also highlights the shipbuilders at NNS and the expertise they bring to their roles. “There is a lot of experience here at the shipyard and I’m glad I took full advantage of it.”
