Four Shipbuilders Named Outstanding Apprentices

Four shipbuilders from Newport News Shipbuilding’s Apprentice School were selected by the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry as Outstanding Apprentices of the Year for 2023.

The sixth annual conference was held at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College on Feb. 15. The honor recognizes apprentices who have excelled in their respective programs in the areas of accuracy and efficiency; cooperation with supervisors and journeymen; initiative; leadership; decision-making ability; and outstanding accomplishments.

The four NNS apprentices selected for the award are:

  • Corey Chambless, metrology technician
  • Steven Mejia Rico, metrology technician
  • Jamica Jones, maintenance electrician
  • Min Joo, cost estimator
