Sept. 11, 2001, remains a steadfast reminder that the work Newport News Shipbuilding does matters. On that day 25 years ago, the United States was victim to the deadliest act of terrorism in recorded history.

There was a visible representation of NNS’ role in national security. Two NNS-built ships – USS George Washington (CVN 73) and the first USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67) – were dispatched to help defend the East Coast.

A third NNS-built ship – the Essex-class Intrepid (CV 11), which has functioned as a museum in New York City since 1982 – served as a replacement headquarters for the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) New York Field Office during the attacks and following investigation. Intrepid also supported the Federal Emergency Management Agency as well as state and local emergency responders.

This solemn anniversary exemplifies the importance of what shipbuilders do every day. They deliver modern marvels that project strength, defend freedom and provide a home for thousands of men and women who bravely serve the U.S.

Please take time to remember the innocent civilians and brave first responders lost on Sept. 11, 2001. We can all reflect on our roles as shipbuilders and how our team can help ensure America never faces this type of attack again.
