From One Step to First 5K

When Adrian White (X41), a production planner and scheduler at Newport News Shipbuilding, started his health journey, running the NNS 5K wasn’t initially part of his plan.

After working with Terry Holbert, a QuadMed wellness coach who partners with NNS shipbuilders, White felt more comfortable setting a goal to complete his first race – last year’s NNS 5K.

“While working with Terry, I was able to bring down my weight and blood pressure. I got to a point where it gave me not only the want, but the ability to participate in the race,” White said.

Running his first 5K wasn’t about winning for White. “I didn’t set out to win, I just wanted to cross the finish line,” he said. It’s an accomplishment he credits to the hard work he put into working out and eating right.

For others on health journeys, White recommends participating in the NNS 5K and looking into the resources provided through QuadMed. “Definitely sign-up. It’s you versus you and where you are on your health journey,” White said.

This year’s NNS 5K will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at Victory Landing Park in downtown Newport News. Registration includes a T-shirt and is $20 for adults and teens, and $15 for children 12 and under. Visit MyQuadMed.com/hii-nns/5k for more information and to register.
