Future Virginia-Class Submarine Named for City of Baltimore
Published September 25, 2024
Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro announced that the future Virginia-class submarine SSN 812 will be named for the city of Baltimore.
The ship-naming ceremony took place in Baltimore aboard the historic USS Constellation.
The name honors the city, the crews of one Continental Navy ship, and the five previous Navy vessels named Baltimore. It continues the recent trend of naming Virginia-class submarines after cities, which includes San Francisco (SSN 810) and Miami (SSN 811).
Del Toro also announced Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks will serve as the ship’s sponsor.
