How to Respond to a Spill

Published January 26, 2021

Newport News Shipbuilding is working to reduce the number of reportable spills.

Because spill kits are the first line of defense, shipbuilders from Environmental Health and Safety (O27), Plant Operations (O46) and the Maintenance Department (O43) are mapping and reclaiming spill kits across the shipyard. The spill kits are emptied, cleaned, relabeled and assigned new points of contact to inspect and reorder material in order to keep the kits stocked and in good condition.

O27 is also educating employees about the importance of the spill kits, knowing who to call, and how to report detailed information so spill response teams can quickly respond and prevent spills from reaching the river.

Watch a spill awareness video on MyNNS. For more information on spill response, visit the O27 Environmental Engineering website on MyNNS. There is a spill information page, which includes the proper process to report a spill, information on spill kit items and other resources.
