Important Security Updates
Published March 18, 2026
As a result of ongoing world events, shipbuilders may notice enhanced security at Newport News Shipbuilding. Plan for increased security measures, which could lead to longer wait times when entering the facility.
37th Street Drive-In Gate
NNS is closing the drive-in gate at 37th Street until further notice in order to strengthen our security posture. All traffic entering the facility must use the Vehicle Inspection Station in the North Yard or the Railroad West Gate off Warwick Boulevard. Unfortunately, this may cause delays when entering Railroad West due to traffic and construction in the area, and it is therefore recommended that anyone entering through this gate plan accordingly. All pedestrian gates remain operational.
Outlying Buildings
Additional security measures include increased fortification of outlying buildings, such as enabling card readers at entrances at all times.
Face Coverings and Medical Masks
Face coverings must be removed prior to entering the facility and while on company property. However, medically required masks are not considered face coverings and are permissible on company property.
“Medically required” means the shipbuilder is able to provide, upon request, evidence that wearing a mask has been recommended by their health care professional based upon the provider’s assessment of the shipbuilder’s medical condition. However, shipbuilders are required to comply with requests to remove the medically required masks for identification purposes.
Smart Glasses
S-1040 Prohibited and Restricted Items and S-1040.1- Control of Personally-Owned Camera and Camera Enabled Devices on NNS Property have been updated to state that smart glasses (wearable tech glasses) are prohibited on NNS premises at all times, including prescription smart glasses.
See Something, Say Something
Shipbuilders are an important line of defense. All of these actions are intended to strengthen the security posture to keep everyone in the shipyard safe. Please be vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
