On Saturday, Sept. 5, Newport News Shipbuilding’s Apprentice School Builders football team will face off against the Captains of Christopher Newport University at Towne Bank Stadium during the inaugural Anchor Bowl.

In addition to their regular practice and preparations, the two teams met each other off the field on Thursday, Aug. 20, to participate in the Crosstown Community Service Day – a collaborative event which sent players across Newport News, Yorktown and Hampton.

Community service projects included helping public school teachers with classroom preparations, grounds beautification at churches, and general assistance at other community partners like the YMCA and THRIVE Peninsula.

Offensive Lineman Raymond Brown (X15) hauled old classroom furniture out of City Life Church.

“It’s been a great day,” he said. “We got some football work in this morning, and now we’re here. I thought that working alongside the competition would be tense. We’re having a fun time, though. It’s hot out here, but we’re getting it done.”

Meanwhile, Defensive Lineman Austin Moore (E84) helped a teacher decorate her classroom at Knollwood Meadows Elementary.

“It’s cool getting with the Captains to give back to our community,” Moore said. “We’re making connections and supporting our schools.”

Shipbuilders interested in attending the Anchor Bowl have a chance to receive a select number of free VIP tickets through a special giveaway sponsored by NNS. The VIP package includes tickets and Priority Lexus VIP Hospitality Deck passes for the game and a tailgate pass for one vehicle.
