Make Your New Year’s Resolution to Save Lives
Published January 7, 2026
2025 brought a meaningful first for James Weed (E11): donating blood. Inspired by a notice in Currents, Weed decided it was the right time to take action and help someone in need.
“When I was a boy, my dad had to get a transfusion, and he also gave blood often. That stuck with me,” he said. “I could be the reason someone survives an accident.”
Weed’s advice to others considering becoming donors is simple and heartfelt. “Think about your family – both at home and at work,” he said. “Someone might need your blood to live, and you could be that person who makes the difference. Plus, you might need blood someday too, so wouldn’t you want someone to donate for you?”
Weed’s story is one of the many inspiring examples behind the 72 shipbuilders who became first‑time blood donors in 2025. “I realized how easy it was to donate my blood and help another person,” he shared. “November was my first time donating, and I’m proud to have taken that step.”
Shipbuilders who are interested in donating blood can find upcoming events on MyNNS.
