MyIdea Program Marks One Year of Shipbuilder Ideas

Published July 8, 2026

Since its launch a year ago, the MyIdea program has received creative ideas from more than 500 shipbuilders to improve specific areas at Newport News Shipbuilding. As the program begins its second year, the MyIdea team is looking for even bigger and bolder ideas to make a more extensive difference across our shipyard.

“MyIdea was created to provide a platform for innovation and collaboration,” said Damon Saetre, vice president of Integrated Planning and Production Control (IPPC). “We have received some creative input through the program thus far, although many of these recommendations are focused on very specific areas of our business and have not been scalable for all to benefit. For our second year, we are looking for even bolder ideas that will inspire and more holistically enable shipbuilders to do the work we do.”

Shipbuilders are encouraged to continue submitting ideas via the MyIdea website on MyNNS, especially those suggestions that will have a broader impact on how we operate. Those without computer access can call the MyIdea Phone Line at 757-534-4332, or 4-IDEA.

The MyIdea team evaluates, prioritizes and implements ideas that support business needs and objectives. Shipbuilders will continue to receive feedback and be notified of the results of their ideas and suggestions.

If an idea is related to an immediate safety concern, shipbuilders should call Environmental, Health & Safety at 757-688-5523. If an idea is related to an ethics or compliance concern, call the Open Line at 1-877-631-0020.
