The Navy commissioned USS New Jersey (SSN 796) on Sept. 14 at Naval Weapons Station Earle in Middletown, New Jersey. It is the 23rd Virginia-class submarine and the 11th delivered by Newport News Shipbuilding.

Speaking at the event, NNS President Jennifer Boykin said the boat “is already making history and setting the bar high,” noting it is the first Virginia-class submarine designed for both male and female sailors.

She also reflected on the special bond between the ship’s crew and the shipbuilders who worked to bring the submarine to life, and paid tribute to Ship’s Sponsor Dr. Susan DiMarco, saying, “may your compassionate spirit inspire all who serve on this fine boat.”
