Shipbuilders commuting down Huntington Avenue may have noticed a new structure standing on Shipyard Drive. This is Newport News Shipbuilding’s new Vehicle Inspection Station (VIS), which opened on Saturday, Feb. 21.

The inspection station, previously located just east of Dry Dock 12, is now at the north end of the Joint Manufacturing Assembly Facility (JMAF). This layout follows the infrastructure typically found on military installations and places the inspection station before any shipyard buildings.

This updated location will also enable more efficient access to the JMAF campus.

Facilities also plans to clear portions of fencing at the old VIS gate to open up the roadways for easier transportation and maneuverability.
