NNS’ 140th Anniversary

Published January 28, 2026

Generations of shipbuilders have contributed to Newport News Shipbuilding’s proud history since the company’s founding in 1886. Whether you’re a Master Shipbuilder with more than 40 years of service, a new member of our shipbuilding team or you fall somewhere in between, thank you for your contributions to our shared legacy.

We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us – shipbuilders who persevered through worldwide conflict, rapidly evolving technology and uncertain times to deliver quality ships that help preserve our way of life. It’s up to us to carry this legacy forward with urgency for the generations to come.

As we mark NNS’ 140th anniversary today, remember that our nation depends on us and what we do every day. And what better way to commemorate today’s milestone than to send John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) out for sea trials.
