NNS 5K Highlights Health Benefits of Movement

Fernando Gaines (E63) knows the benefits of the Newport News Shipbuilding 5K firsthand. The longtime shipbuilder has participated in the annual event for about a decade and credits it with helping him make positive, long-lasting changes.

“I’m a Type 2 diabetic, and I had some level of obesity as well,” Gaines said. “The 5K was my call to fitness, so to speak.”

An elevated result from an A1C test – which measures average blood sugar over the past two or three months – and encouragement from a friend pushed Gaines to begin participating in the 5K. The event is friendly to those from all fitness levels.

“I’ve learned that you do not have to be an athlete. You do not have to be in peak physical condition. You could even be a couch potato. The 5K is a benefit to you,” he said. “Last year, I had an amazing experience because I normally try to get in the middle of the pack, but this time I kind of got in the back of the pack. That’s where the walkers are. I was amazed at the number of people who were using walkers and various leg braces and apparatuses to assist them in walking, and they still participated.”

Beyond the 5K, Gaines has taken advantage of other wellness benefits provided by company – particularly the Hearts of Steel program, which was led by Terry Holbert.

“Daily activity is very important. Even if you have issues – I have knee issues and I’ve had back issues – you have to keep moving. You may not be able to move as fast as you used to, but keep moving,” Gaines said.

This year, he’s looking forward to beating his personal best time – which he set last year.

“I strongly recommend all shipbuilders participate in the 5K,” Gaines said. “It’s amazing. It’s been life changing for me.”
