NNS Supports 20th Annual Ship Repair Digital Innovation Competition

Published April 8, 2026

Newport News shipbuilders were proud to support and participate in the 20th Annual Ship Repair Digital Innovation Competition, held March 19. The event brought together middle school students from across the region to demonstrate their capabilities in computer-aided drawing (CAD) design, technical writing and professional presentations.

The competition reflected the strength and importance of the local ship repair industry, which contributes approximately $6.4 billion to the regional economy and supports more than 60,000 jobs. Through hands-on application and real-world problem solving, students gained early exposure to the technical and professional skills that are critical to the industry’s future workforce.

Shipbuilders Preshus Boone (E35) and Aysis Belair (X41) served as judges, supporting student evaluation and providing industry perspective. Their participation reflects NNS’ continued commitment to STEM outreach and workforce development across Hampton Roads.

Events like this reinforce the importance of early engagement in STEM and skilled trades, ensuring the next generation is prepared to support the evolving needs of the shipbuilding industry.
