NNS Welcomes LEAD Peninsula Participants

Newport News Shipbuilding welcomed 51 participants – including two NNS employees – from LEAD Peninsula to the shipyard in June for their Manufacturing and Technology Day.
LEAD Peninsula is a 10-month leadership and community development program sponsored by the Virginia Peninsula Chamber. The program provides experiences to connect with the various aspects of the community via monthly events.
At NNS, participants toured the Mobile Experience (MX) Trailer, where they used the hands-on welding trainer and saw demonstrations of visual work instructions (VWI) and augmented reality. They also toured the Enterprise (CVN 80)/Dry Dock 12 area, where they watched a time-lapse video showing aircraft carrier construction, saw firsthand superlift construction, and visited the new CVN Assembly Hall to better understand NNS’ investment in facilities to mitigate weather-related construction delays.
Following the tour, the LEAD Peninsula team was presented challenge coins from Government Relations and Supply Chain Management.
Several NNS employees had a part in making the visit a success, including Tom Cosgrove (O12), Linda Carrithers (K51), Yakong Wong (K51) Curstin Zydron (O51), Courtney Huff (O51), Juli Street (K18) and LEAD Peninsula alumni Julie Halsey (O59) and David White (X02).
