Nominations Open for Spring 2024 Diversity Conferences

Published April 19, 2023

Newport News Shipbuilding is committed to demonstrating diversity and inclusion as a business imperative. The company takes pride in celebrating employees and recognizing success in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) through participation in national conventions and award conferences. Through this effort, NNS supports six major STEM diversity conferences each year: Black Engineer of the Year Award (BEYA), Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers (SASE), Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), Society of Women Engineers (SWE), STEP (science, technology, engineering, and production) Ahead, and Women of Color Awards and Conference (WOC).

Twice a year, the company requests nominations of employees who have and are making significant contributions to be recognized on a national platform during these conferences. Nominations for the conferences listed below are open through May 12.

  • Black Engineer of the Year Award (BEYA): Founded in 1986, the Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) is a globally-recognized event that celebrates the achievements of people who are underrepresented in STEM fields. The goal is to create connections between students, educators, and professionals while facilitating partnerships with individuals and their local STEM resources.
  • Women Make America (formally STEP Ahead): The Manufacturing Institute launched the Women Make America awards as an initiative to recognize women in science, technology, engineering and production careers whether they are running the company, designing the next big product or testing innovations on the shop floor.
  • Society of Women Engineers (SWE): The Society of Women Engineers strives to advance and honor the contributions of women at all stages of their careers as well as recognize the successes of SWE members and individuals who enhance the engineering profession through contributions to industry, education and the community. SWE awards recognize individuals and groups who support the core values of the society: integrity, inclusive environment, mutual support, professional excellence and trust.
