Newport News Shipbuilding’s Operations Division recognized nine shipbuilders this week with Values in Action Awards.

The Values in Action Award, previously called the On-the-Spot Ethics Award, recognizes shipbuilders whose ethical behavior and actions demonstrate the HII values: integrity, safety, respect, engagement, responsibility and performance.

Lucas Hicks, vice president of Operations, led the recognition and praised the shipbuilders’ efforts.

“This is foundational,” Hicks said. “How we act, behave and treat each other are what make the hard days bearable. It is up to each of us to make this a collaborative place to work. I appreciate that all of you outwardly demonstrate the values that all shipbuilders should exhibit every day.”

Tarrell Thomas (X36) was honored with a Level One Values in Action Award.

In April, Thomas witnessed a vehicle accident between a police officer and a civilian. The accident left the police officer trapped in his car, but Thomas responded and successfully extracted the officer from his car.
