PEER Program Preparing for Next Cohort
Published August 23, 2023
The Professional Enhancement and Enrichment Rotation (PEER) Program is preparing for the January 2024 onboarding of Cohort 20. Full-time salaried individual contributors who are interested in the PEER Program can register for a lunch and learn or open house event on MyNNS.
The PEER Program is a two-year rotation program for full-time salaried individual contributors. Participants select four rotations from a broad list of Newport News Shipbuilding departments.
PEER Program Manager Gary Figg has led the program for the past five years and provided the following guidance for potential candidates and nominating managers: The most successful participants join the PEER program prepared for a wide range of development. The five core PEER competencies are known as the ICARE brand: Innovative, Collaborative, Adaptive, Results Driven and Enthusiastically Engaged.
Figg shared that every PEER participant experiences professional development through a structured curriculum and the intentional challenges of new assignments. Many participants also grow from unexpected opportunities that come with the support of a PEER network that includes over 350 stakeholders ranging from individual contributors to senior leaders.
Participants must be open-minded to growth and development that is outside of their current comfort zone, Figg added. “Meaningful growth only comes when we are being challenged beyond our norms,” he said.
Host managers are encouraged to nominate candidates who have demonstrated a willingness and passion for professional and personal growth and development.
In the past two years, the program has added structured career paths to leadership positions, program offices, innovation and technology roles as well a Career Planning for Job Fulfillment workshop. Current participants and recent graduates are also participating in bi-monthly PEER Positive events as a means to enhance their joy in the workplace.
The PEER nomination form and testimonials from PEER graduates are available on the PEER website on MyNNS.
