The Relay for Life Campaign at NNS rallied behind the theme of “May The Light Cure The Way.”

Relay for Life Campaign Raises a Record $43,000

Shipbuilders rallied to support this year’s Relay for Life campaign, raising $43,000 for the American Cancer Society. “May the Light Cure the Way” proved to be an impactful slogan that generated interest, competition and unity.

Newport News Shipbuilding sponsored the event and was represented by 33 teams led by passionate individuals. With the continuous support of executive sponsor Thomasina Wright, vice president of Fleet Support Programs, the momentum generated early and participation intensified throughout the campaign.

Each team was challenged with generating the most engagement by collecting donations. The Relay for Life Team of the Year is the Human Resources and Administration Jedi Mind Tricks, led by Amy O’Donnell (O35). By raising $5,642 with 31 members, the Human Resources Division took top honors and will keep the traveling Relay for Life trophy until next year.

The trophy for highest donations for an individual went to Elsie Bledsoe (X32). She raised $2,085 for her team, Angels Among Us.

The NNS Relay for Life team thanks everyone who made this year’s campaign such a success, including team captains and those who support them, all the NNS volunteers and everyone who made a donation, bought a T-shirt or requested a luminaria.
