Newport News shipbuilders rallied in support for this year’s Relay For Life, raising a record $48,801 for the American Cancer Society. Team captains, who worked hard to get the word out and raise donations, were recognized at a celebration on June 4. The top three teams were awarded trophies for their efforts.

Top honors went to Beverly Staten (K54) and her team “Just Cure It,” which generated $10,115 in donations. Staten shared that she received overwhelming support from many departments, groups, friends, family and co-workers. “It fills my heart with joy to be able to be a part of something life changing for people on this journey,” she said. “I pray that one day there will be an end to cancer.”

Staten also received the NNS top participant plaque. She is rated second in the Peninsula region for Relay For Life individual donations raised.

In second place was Sherry Morgan (O35) and her team “HR CURE-a-bunga Dudes,” which collected $7,543. In third place, raising more than twice as much as last year, was Elsie Bledsoe (X32) and “Angels Among Us” with a total of $5,604.

“The NNS Relay For Life team would like to thank everyone that made this year’s campaign such a success,” Juli Street (K18) said. “This includes team captains and those who support them, each of the NNS volunteers who came to the event to help out, and everyone who made a donation, bought a T-shirt or requested a luminaria. Each person’s effort takes us one step closer to finding a cure for cancer.”
