Relay For Life Champion Beverly Staten

Beverly Staten (K54) began participating in the Newport News Shipbuilding Relay For Life campaign three years ago, though her support for the American Cancer Society stretches back much further. Staten contributed as a donor for years before deciding to take a more active role in the fight against cancer.
Becoming a Relay For Life team captain felt like the right step. It allows Staten to lead by example. She enjoys the opportunity to recruit others, build momentum and show what’s possible when people unite with purpose.
In 2025, Staten led the top-fundraising NNS Relay For Life team, Just Cure It, raising over $10,000.
Cancer has touched the lives of several of Staten’s cousins and friends, but this year it became even more personal. “Walking alongside someone close to me as they navigate the fight against cancer let me be a supporter, a listener and a steady presence,” she said. “It has been an eye opener. I’ve always had compassion for those battling cancer, but now I understand their journey on a deeper, more emotional level.”
Her “secret sauce” for fundraising is simple but powerful.
“I focus on engagement, having real conversations, building trust and showing gratitude consistently,” Staten said. “These are my everyday practices. When people feel valued and connected, they’re more willing to support a cause that matters. It’s rewarding to be part of the NNS Relay For Life campaign and know that something I’ve done has made a positive impact.”
This year’s Relay For Life event will take place on May 2 at Todd Stadium. Shipbuilders interested in volunteering, fundraising or attending the event should visit the Relay For Life page on MyNNS.
