Newport News Shipbuilding teams, departments and individuals together raised more than $22,000 for the 2023 Peninsula Relay For Life, supporting the fight against cancer. Held at Todd Stadium on May 6, the event was a day to reflect, celebrate and remember loved ones who have been touched by or lost to cancer.
Lively music encouraged attendees to walk a path lined with hundreds of paper luminarias decorated with names and encouraging words. Over 30 NNS volunteers and Relay For Life team members greeted the survivors, caregivers and participants throughout the event, continuing to raise funds and awareness for a future free from cancer.
The NNS Relay For Life team thanks everyone who made this year’s campaign a success, including executive sponsor Gary Fuller, vice president of Fleet Support Programs.
“Our shipbuilders were out in force ‘Battling to Cure Cancer’ in support of the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life,” Fuller said. “NNS volunteers supported the full day event with setup, games, fundraising, cheering on survivors and caregivers, and walking the track lined with luminaria. Thank you to all the teams and volunteers that made this year’s event a tremendous success.”
Donations can be made through May 31 by visiting www.RelayForLife.org/NNS, or purchasing a limited edition NNS Relay For Life T-shirt for $10. NNS donations help fund groundbreaking cancer research and patient care programs that can make a difference in communities like ours.
