Fellow Shipbuilders,

Do you remember where you were and what you were doing 25 years ago today? For those who do, you also remember the moment you came to the devastating realization that planes were intentionally being flown into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

9/11 is a day we will never forget.

These attacks on American soil – as well as the incredible acts of heroism by those who intentionally downed their own plane in Pennsylvania to save countless strangers – changed our nation forever.

This message is personal. It is a battle cry to every Newport News Shipbuilder.

I continue to be in awe of our first responders and the men and women who relentlessly stand the watch, running toward danger, knowing that none of us should take this for granted. Our freedoms are ours because others choose to protect them. While they maintain their resolve to stand on the front lines, we are the force behind them providing the fighting advantage when they need it most. If we are here to do anything else, then we have lost our resolve.

As we solemnly remember the Americans lost on September 11, 2001, I ask this: please use this day to strengthen your resolve around what we gained through that loss…purpose, conviction and clear perspective on what matters most and how fast it can change. Remember it, feel it and let it fuel your drive to do the work of a nation protecting freedom not just here, but around the world.
