Remembering Sen. John Warner

Published May 26, 2021

I was saddened to hear former Virginia Sen. John Warner passed away at the age of 94. Sen. Warner, a U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps veteran, visited Newport News Shipbuilding often and was a strong advocate for the Navy and for shipbuilders throughout his career.

He was instrumental in the development of the successful teaming agreement between NNS and General Dynamics Electric Boat to build Virginia-class submarines, and we were honored to build and christen his namesake submarine – USS John Warner (SSN 785).

While preparing for the christening ceremony in 2014, he said the following:

“Throughout life, I have received more than a share of life’s good fortunes. I am deeply humbled that SSN 785 will carry my name, and deeply honored that Jeanne, my wife, is serving as the sponsor. I know the love, kindness and care that she has not only given to me, our family, our friends and their families, she will likewise impart to those who accept the perils of the seas as they sail this great submarine in the cause of freedom.”

Please join me in sending heartfelt condolences to Sen. Warner’s wife Jeanne and his entire family. And please take a moment to watch this video tribute featuring the song Shenandoah – which was one of the senator’s favorites that he personally selected for the christening celebration.

Respectfully,
