Shipbuilder Recognized by Naval Submarine League

Ohio native Nicholas Wobser (X18) embodies what it means to be a Newport News shipbuilder and has established a reputation through grit, perseverance and craftsmanship.

In 2020, Wobser was nominated for the Virginia Ship Repair Association’s Senior Tradesperson of the Year award. Since then, he has become a two-time recipient of NNS’ Model of Excellence (MOE) award.

After 16 years as a shipbuilder, Wobser is now a nationally recognized craftsman as a recipient of the Naval Submarine League’s (NSL) Workforce Stars Award.

“This is an honor,” he said. “I grew up watching my grandpa welding in the garage and learned from that. I wanted to carry on his legacy, and that’s always kept me motivated.”

The Workforce Stars Award recognizes six trades personnel who have been identified as exemplary contributors to the repair, maintenance or construction of the nation’s submarine force.

Adam Holbrooks (K46), Wobser’s acting general foreman, testified to his work ethic.

“He’s chill, relaxed, easy-going,” Holbrooks said. “The crew jokes that we wish we had 10 Wobsers on our team.”

Wobser believes his crew is deserving of this same recognition and praised their skill while offering a piece of advice for new shipbuilders.

“Out of this whole team, you could have picked anyone for this award and they would have fit. Everyone is extremely qualified and talented. My advice for new shipbuilders is to stay focused, stay determined and learn everything they can. Skill doesn’t develop overnight, so listen to the more experienced crew members. I’m still learning new things out here.”
