Shipbuilders Fight Cancer During Relay For Life Campaign

Published June 3, 2026

Newport News shipbuilders rallied in support for this year’s Relay For Life, raising more than $42,000 for the American Cancer Society. Team captains who worked hard to get the word out and raise donations were recognized at the NNS celebration on May 28. The top three teams were awarded trophies for their efforts.

Top honors go to Beverly Staten (K54) and her team “Just Cure It,” which generated $11,716 in donations – a $1,600 increase over their 2025 total. Staten shared that she focuses on engagement, having real conversations, building trust and showing gratitude consistently.

In addition to her accomplishments as captain of the top team at NNS, Staten was top participant for the entire Peninsula region.

The HR&A team, led by Sherry Morgan (O35), received second-place honors, collecting $5,553. In third place, raising $5,420, was Elsie Bledsoe (E37) and “Angels Among Us.”

“The NNS Relay For Life team would like to thank everyone that made this year’s campaign such a success,” said Juli Street (K18). “This includes team captains and those who support them, each of the NNS volunteers who came to the event to help out, and everyone who made a donation, bought a T-shirt or requested a luminaria. Each person’s effort takes us one step closer to finding a cure for cancer.”
