Shipbuilders Impacting Lives and Communities on the Peninsula

Published January 7, 2026

Newport News Shipbuilding maintains a strong relationship with Serve the City (STC), an organization that mobilizes volunteers to meet practical needs, build meaningful relationships, and transform lives and neighborhoods across the Virginia Peninsula.

Areas of focus include food insecurity, elder care, homelessness, environmental concerns and children. NNS’ relationship with STC began in 2021 as an Information Technology-led endeavor to give back to the community.

Now, more shipbuilders are embracing the STC motto, “Many people doing small things can make a big difference.”

In 2025, 56 shipbuilders volunteered their time and effort. Over half of those volunteers proudly participated more than one time; however, the drive does not stop there. Nine shipbuilders are trained STC project leaders, and two shipbuilders serve on the STC Board.

As of early December 2025, these shipbuilders accumulated over 700 hours of time validated across 273 events, and an economic impact of almost $25,000.

Shipbuilders interested in volunteering in 2026 should visit the STC homepage on MyNNS, or contact Cathy Zimeras (T55).
