Shipbuilders Recognized for USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) Work

Newport News Shipbuilding’s Coatings Technology and Materials Engineering Department (E33) was recognized recently at the Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) Annual Conference and Expo 2023 in Denver.

The refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) of USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) was selected for the Excellence in Management of a Complex Materials Protection Project Award. E33 Manager Dave Modzelewski’s group was selected by AMPP for planning, execution and engineering support of the RCOH. That includes, but is not limited to, the full represervation of the freeboard, underwater hull, more than 200 tanks and non-skidding of the carrier.

The award recognizes superior management of a complex materials protection project involving one or multiple materials protection solutions such as cathodic protection, protective coatings, materials selection or design.

The award was presented as a group to E33 at NNS; Sherwin-Williams, the paint material supplier; Mid-Atlantic Coatings, an NNS subcontract vendor; the U.S. Navy; Barton Abrasives; VO Baker; and WIWA Pumps, a supplier for Mid-Atlantic Coatings.
