Shipbuilders Recognized for Volunteer Service

Newport News Shipbuilding’s Corporate Citizenship team hosted a volunteer appreciation event in late April.

In all, Corporate Citizenship recognized 70 shipbuilders’ volunteer service within the company and community. Top honors went to Marcia Stewart (E82), who consistently goes above and beyond in her roles as a team captain for NNS Relay For Life and Heart Walk, as well as a volunteer for United Way and HIIPAC. Her leadership, passion for giving back and ability to inspire others make a lasting difference within the organization and throughout the broader community.

Stewart’s volunteer journey is filled with meaningful moments, including participating in the first NNS 5K walk/run, helping charter the Veterans Employee Resource Group (VERG) and taking part in the Relay For Life when it was an overnight event.

“Volunteering is a way for me to give back and show appreciation,” Stewart said. “I know that not everyone is fortunate in every area of life, so where I can serve, I do.”

Her dedication to veterans is especially meaningful, honoring both the seen and unseen sacrifices they make. Through her involvement, she strives to ensure veterans feel supported, valued and remembered.

She added, “The NNS Gives community programs provide me with the opportunity to serve a diverse community and witness the real impact of selfless giving.”
