Shipbuilders Support NNS Neighbors with Serve the City
Published May 7, 2025
Approximately 40 shipbuilders recently partnered with Serve the City (STC), local families and students from Christopher Newport University to clean up the nearby Huntington Heights neighborhood in the spirit of community and fellowship.
Volunteers spread from 71st Street to 45th Street and worked for two hours on Saturday, April 26, collecting 35 bags of trash in the process. This cleanup was one of multiple STC projects in recognition of Earth Day.
Cathy Zimeras (T55) said the event served as an opportunity for shipbuilders to “work on building back our relationships with our neighbors,” and got to share their stories with engaged college students who were eager to learn about Newport News Shipbuilding.
NNS’ relationship with STC started in 2021 as an Information Technology-led endeavor to give back to the community, and it has grown larger in the years since as more shipbuilders embrace the STC motto, “Many people doing small things can make a big difference.”
Shipbuilders interested in volunteering should visit the STC website on MyNNS for upcoming events and pictures of past events.
