Special Emphasis Program Functional Audit Planned July 24-28

Published July 5, 2023

Supervisor of Shipbuilding Newport News (SUPSHIPNN) will conduct a review of Newport News Shipbuilding’s compliance with the Submarine Safety (SUBSAFE), Deep Submergence Systems – Scope of Certification (DSS-SOC), and Fly-By-Wire Ship Control Systems (FBW SCS) program requirements during the week of July 24-28.

Functional audits are designed to review processes, controls, procedures and in-process work done by NNS in SUBSAFE, DSS-SOC and FBW SCS construction and repair. These audits provide an evaluation of the effectiveness with which quality assurance and control responsibilities are being implemented to demonstrate that the submarines built and repaired at NNS are of the highest standards and meet all aspects of rigorous Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) requirements.

“Many NNS departments will be called upon to support this audit. The SUBSAFE Program Office needs everyone’s assistance in ensuring we provide full support during preparation and execution of the audit as SUPSHIPNN scrubs our planning, engineering, execution and documentation of NNS Special Emphasis program work. This audit allows NNS to demonstrate our unwavering commitment to quality in submarine construction and repair work that we do every day,” said NNS SUBSAFE Program Director Scott Shane.
