Swinging for a Cause: IT Division’s Charity Golf Tournament Triumphs

Published July 30, 2025

Newport News Shipbuilding’s Information Technology (IT) division recently hosted a charity golf tournament, raising $15,000 for Serve the City Peninsula (STCP). The event was a resounding success, with 32 teams and 127 players participating in a day filled with camaraderie, networking, and a shared passion for giving back to the community.

The IT division has supported STCP, a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the less fortunate in the Peninsula area, for more than eight years. However, this was the division’s first time supporting the nonprofit through a golf tournament.

Tim Reynolds (T53) led the initiative with a committee of eight engaged team members and an additional 22 volunteers who supported both the days leading up to and the day of the event. This team worked tirelessly to ensure a seamless experience for all participants and the greatest possible gift toward STCP.

“The golf course provided the perfect backdrop for the tournament. The day was filled with laughter, friendly competition, and a sense of unity as players from various teams came together to support a worthy cause,” Reynolds said.

The event also featured games and raffle prizes that helped raise additional funds and created a buzz that kept everyone engaged throughout the day. These collective efforts culminated in Jason Sutton, vice president and chief information officer, presenting the proceeds to STCP during a recent board meeting.

The IT division’s charity golf tournament was a shining example of how a shared passion for giving back can bring people together and make a positive impact on the community. The organizers are already looking forward to next year’s event – eager to continue their support for STCP and create more memorable experiences for all involved.
